Amato Sole Design Within Reach ( For Real)

1 Dec

The one thing about Barcelona that never ceases to amaze me is, its ability to hide the greatest treasures in plain sight. On a busy street, in the Raval, behind a tin door is the entrance to Barcelona’s most forward thinking design shop AMATO SOLE.

While most designers have felt the pinch and have not been able to produce their own pieces, AMATO SOLE is changing the way furniture is designed, produced and consumed with a back to basis approach which is both stylish and budget conscious.

While the thought of recycled design usually congers up images of Design School end-of-term projects.  However the design team  of Annamaria Amato (Archiect & Refurbisher) & Ramón Solé (Industrial Designer)  have taken over an entire warehouse and have converted the space into their Showroom/Home.

With an entire range of  flea-market finds, they put an emphasis on handmade designs which are both practical yet stylish. Their showroom covers all aspects of home designs from Ramon’s amazing designer lamps, to Anna’s recyled windows that get a second chance thanks to the AMATO SOLE touch.

At their recent monthly event which showcases up and coming artists, I got the load-down on their upcoming projects  from  vintage desks to original iron chairs exclusively designed in-house.

Their unique dining tables and benches are among the pieces which stand out. In times where home design is is limited to Swedish mass produced furniture, Amato Sole give buyers a chance to purchase their unique designs for a fraction of what most industrial designers charge for similar pieces.

Their love for materials textures and finishes comes through loud and clear with the amount of passion they put into every handmade piece.  Fall into the world of Amato Sole  and your home or office will never be the same.

Lázaro Rosa-Violán – Studio Contemporain

20 Jan

His work has been featured in numerous magazines, his restaurants have been among the most talked about in the city and his hotels have the ability to transport guests from the moment they step through the door.

His first project a restaurant, was carried out in the Balearic Island of Ibiza in 1990 and in 2003 he established CONTEMPORAIN, his Barcelona based design firm with a flair for international design and impeccable taste is located on a quiet street in the Eixample, steps away from the Arc of Triumph.

Lázaro Rosa-Violán describes himself as an ‘urban archaeologist’ and ‘style hunter’  merging  an eclectic mix of  the urban city streets with  the serenity of the balearic islands. His designs inspire even the most jaded city slicker to put down the blackberry and relax.

Rosa-Violán leads Contemporain’s eight-strong team of industrial, interior and graphic designers “The interior designer is an actor“, he has been quoted saying “He must dress up and change roles, understand new identities and integrate them with his own.”

His ability to re-interpret classic design icons, with a culturally aware sense of aesthetics and technical knowledge has resulted in an impressive portfolio filled with a sense of luxury and timelessness.  To date Contemporain has created over 40 distinguished interiors for some of Spain’s most successful restaurants, boutique hotels and retails establishments, from a 100-room hostelries to a micro food shop.

His keen eye to every last detail, allows him to orchestrate a combination which brings together the finest pieces of  furniture, textiles and wall art  resulting in harmonious interiors which instantly stand out thanks to their effortless charm and sophisticated color palette.

In today’s cluttered marketplace, clear and succinct branding is vital. Unique identities are not achieved by vision alone. With this in mind, Contemporain has changed the face of design in Barcelona and has left his signature mark on dining rooms and lobbies throughout Catalunya.

Barcelona Design Studio: ARQUITECTURA-G

The Barcelona based design studio of ARQUITECTURA-G  formed by:  Jordi Ayala, Aitor Fuentes, Jonathan Arnabat and Igor Urdanpileta back when they were students, has evolved into the very model of what every design studio should strive to be.

Their work has been featured in countless design magazines (most recently in NEO2) as well as invited to participate in many forums and lectures on the future of sustainable  design.

Their modern approach to design and architecture is a welcome reprise from the trends we have seen in the last few years where bigger meant better. Their socially responsible designs and low impact lines mean less visual pollution in urban landscapes and more public spaces, which is evident in the  proposal video for the sports hall in Paris.

Recently the studio completed a major overhaul of an apartment in the Eixample neighborhood, which has caught the media’s eye due to  its simplistic approach of the redistribution of space. They have managed to restore the original floors, and have angled walls in order to conceive a more open way of  modern living.  The result is a serene space that hangs above the bustling streets of Barcelona.

The studio now  forges ahead with several new projects on their drawing board.  Among them a redesign  for the store FUREST in Barcelona’s fashion epicenter known as Passeige de Gracia.

A house on a hillside in France , as well as a proposal for a new Sports & Congress Hall in Paris.
